Finding A Doctor

by Wellness Matters

Choose your family doctor carefully - someone you like and someone who understands you. So, how do you find him or her?

First, ask for referrals. Your family and friends probably have doctors they rely on and trust that they could recommend. Also, you can often find a list of available physicians from your local hospital.

Second, examine your personal preferences. Do you prefer a male or a female doctor? Someone who is younger or older than you are?

Third, when you have someone in mind, phone his or her office and ask some questions.

* Is the doctor accepting new patients?
* Is he/she accessible or do you have to book an appointment?
* Will another doctor in the office see you if your doctor is unavailable?
* Does he/she deliver babies?

Fourth, make an appointment to meet and interview the doctor with a medical concern in mind. Can you be honest about your concerns, or are you embarrassed and uncomfortable? Does the doctor share your ideas about wellness? Does he/she really listen or do you feel rushed?

Consider meeting with a couple of doctors before you decide. By asking good questions and taking your time, you will eventually find a doctor whom you can trust and who will contribute to your well being.
